Nesting Variables do not work for me on a raspberry

I tried to do things like this :

LA="de"
COUNTRY="DE"
LANG="${LA}_${COUNTRY}"
CHARSET="UTF-8"
LC_CTYPE="${LANG}@${CHARSET}"

and it does not work on my raspberry
the variables are simply not loaded.

But things like this :

LA="de"
COUNTRY="DE"
LANG="de_DE"
CHARSET="UTF-8"
LC_CTYPE="de_DE@UTF-8"

work without problems on raspberry

on a normal Linux box both versions work.

Is there some requirement missing on the raspberry?
how can I put phpdotenv in debug mode or see the phpdotenvs log files ?

Thanks for the report. The most likely explanation is that your Raspberry Pi exports LANG (and possibly LC_CTYPE) at the OS level, which raspi-config does by default, whereas your other Linux box or its web server environment doesn't. With createImmutable() an existing environment variable is never overwritten, so LANG keeps the system value and ${LANG} in the LC_CTYPE line expands to that system value rather than de_DE, which is why the nested file looks broken while the literal one still gives you the right LC_CTYPE. You can confirm by printing $_SERVER['LANG'] before loading, or by switching to createMutable(), which will overwrite the system values. There's no debug mode or log file, but load() returns exactly the variables it set, and Dotenv::parse() on the file contents shows what the parser produces independently of the environment. If it still reproduces after that, please share the phpdotenv and PHP versions on the Pi along with the code you use to load the file.
