[BUG] No input from built-in microphone on Fujitsu Lifebook E5512 (Alder Lake) #5949
Description
Describe the bug
It is not possible to use he built-in microphone on a Fujitsu Lifebook E5512 (Alder Lake chipset).
This used to work in older kernels (6.6 for sure) via the workaround described at https://abarry.org/ubuntu-on-razer-blade-15-2022-advanced/ ("Microphone"), using a .sof provided at https://github.com/thesofproject/linux/files/5981682/sof-hda-generic-2ch-pdm1.zip
However, that trick no longer works, most likely due to changes in recent kernels (using 6.18). I've tried to understand the differences in the above .sof files but failed for lack of deeper knowledge.
Please also read https://thesofproject.github.io/latest/contribute/process/bug-tracking.html for further information on submitting bugs.
Um, that's 404
To Reproduce
- Open audio settings, or start pavucontrol if available - anything that gives visual feedback of the microphone level.
- Of course, make sure the microphone is not muted.
- Tap on the device if headset is unplugged. For comparison tap on the headset microphone if plugged.
- Observed: No visual feedback if unplugged. Plugged works as expected.
Reproduction Rate
Always.
Expected behavior
The "input level" visual shows activity.
Impact
The built-in microphone is not usable. Despite it's often inferior in quality, it is still needed in some scenarios.
Environment
Tested on Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, 26.04, and the latest 26.10 development snapshot.
The problem was first observed on a home-grown Linux kernel (6.18.y), Ubuntu is only used to have a easily reproducible installation.
- Branch name and commit hash of the 2 repositories: sof (firmware/topology) and linux (kernel driver).
- Kernel: Ubuntu's 7.2.0-5-generic, also seen with v6.18.52 or any other recent
- SOF: (What firmware/topology repository am I looking for?)
- Name of the topology file
- Topology: intel/sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg [1]
- Name of the platform(s) on which the bug is observed.
- Platform: Alder Lake PCH-P

That's again 404.
dmesg is attached, sof-logger output will follow.
Other information
It was suggested in some reports like thesofproject/sof#5989 to try alternate module options to snd_sof_intel_hda_common or snd-intel-dspcfg. I've tried a few but no avail.
Another observation: In the Ubuntu sound settings, with a headset plugged, the "Input" shows two options:
- Stereo Microphone - Alder Lake PCH-P High Definition Audio Controller
- Digital Microphone - Alder Lake PCH-P High Definition Audio Controller
with "Stereo" being the working one.
When unpluging, the "Stereo" option disappears.
Trying variants of sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg from the sof-bin repository makes things worse:

I don't know where gh hides the "Attach file" function, so using plain text in a comment:

Another case looks like IPC3/DMIC PDM1 thesofproject/sof#11216 . Did @ujfalusi @singalsu we have the runtime kernel option to use PDM1 instead?
ujfalusi commentedon Sep 22, 2026
@christoph-at-unicon, can you try this?
put it in
/etc/modprobe.d/sof-pdm1-dmic.confand reboot.christoph-at-unicon commentedon Sep 23, 2026
@ujfalusi That helped. Thanks a lot.
ujfalusi commentedon Sep 24, 2026
Unfortunately we don't have a quirk mechanism to deploy in kernel for the pdm1 SKUs, you need to keep this config parameter.
Can you close the issue if you are satisfied with the resolution?
@bardliao, @kv2019i, we might want to figure a match handling for these devices.

Luckily, I can deploy this workaround on a per-hardware base, using some DMI strings.
For other users though, it might be helpful if they could find this hint in a more prominent place than this bug report.
If you don't mind, I'd like to keep this open for another week as I cannot test this in our production environment yet.
kv2019i commentedon Sep 24, 2026
@ujfalusi I have this as draft #5895 . I've been waiting for bug reporter of #5894 to report back. Maybe we push this forward as there seems to be more of the PDM1 cases now.
ujfalusi commentedon Sep 25, 2026
@christoph-at-unicon , can you share the output of
alsa-info.sh --no-uploadand we will nag @kv2019i to work on #5895 as a generic framework with the few devices that we are now aware of.christoph-at-unicon commentedon Sep 28, 2026
@ujfalusi Attaching the file from a run with the extra module parameter (see the "Kernel command line" line in dmesg). As I had to install something else on the client, I gathered this after booting from a Ubuntu 26.04 live stick. If this version is too old, let me know.
Otherwise, I am pleased to confirm the workaround solves my problem, so feel free to close, whatever matches your preferred workflow.
