This seems redundant with line 309?

I don't think so (although I could be wrong). Line 309 is the case where a user points TBB_LIB at their own TBB, and it already included --disable-new-dtags. Line 335 is for the TBB in lib/tbb that CmdStan builds, which had -rpath without it. So this line is actually the fix, the rest of the diff is just because I moved the LDFLAGS_TBB_DTAGS definition above the ifdef so both cases can use it.

ah I see. These makefiles are really a mess that I think could be cleaned up significantly if only ever defined LDFLAGS_TBB in one place and just set the constituent parts conditionally, that way we wouldn’t have to totally duplicate the work in the case of a custom TBB location

Definitely a mess. Do you want that before this fix or can this one go in before the makefile cleanup?

this worked correctly on my Ubuntu 22.04 laptop (g++ 11.4.0) and on a RHEL 9 cluster (GCC 13.3.0) |

Summary
When
TBB_LIBis set,make/compiler_flagslinks with-Wl,-rpathplus-Wl,--disable-new-dtags. Without it set the TBB inlib/tbbonly adds-Wl,-rpath.On Linux
-rpathwithout--disable-new-dtagswritesDT_RUNPATH, which the loader checks afterLD_LIBRARY_PATH(forDT_RPATHit's the other way around). So anything linked with the bundled TBB runs on whateverlibtbb.so.2is in anLD_LIBRARY_PATHdirectory.@avehtari noticed this in stan-dev/cmdstanr#1177 (last comment). R sets
LD_LIBRARY_PATHfor every process it starts and on Debian/Ubuntu that includes/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu, so with "Ubuntu'slibtbb2packageinstalled every CmdStan model run from R uses the system TBB, not the one it was built with. Right now it doesn't matter because both are 2020.x, which is probably why nobody noticed.
This PR moves the
LDFLAGS_TBB_DTAGSdefinition aboveifdef TBB_LIBso it applies either way, and adds it next to the -rpath for the bundled TBB.Tests
No new test, it's a makefile change only. Like I did for #3415, I had Claude print
LDFLAGS_TBBfor eachOSfrom a small makefile that includesmake/compiler_flags. Only the Linux row withoutTBB_LIBchanges:I also checked it in Docker (rocker/r-ver:4.3, Ubuntu 22.04, R 4.3.3, CmdStan 2.40.0 but with this change included, Ubuntu's
libtbb22020.3).Release notes
Executables and libraries linked with the bundled TBB now use it even if a different TBB is on
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, like they already did whenTBB_LIBis set.Checklist
I left some boxes unchecked since this is just a makefile change
