libev: don't stall 5s in the atexit cleanup - #1155
Since 3.29.11, a process using the libev reactor usually exits 5 seconds late: the atexit LibevLoop._cleanup() waits out its 5s join timeout on the event-loop thread. In cqlsh the rows of COPY FROM ... WITH TTL = '5' expire during that delay, failing the dtest test_reading_with_ttl.
_cleanup() stops the prepare watcher, which was unref()'d when it was started, without taking the reference back. libev's active count drops to -1, so a loop thread still in ev_run() never returns. Since 2e0ae94 the loop thread closes the sockets of closed connections itself, so at exit it's always still in ev_run(). Details and the bisect are in the issue.
The fix:
Add Loop.ref() to libevwrapper, and call it before stopping the prepare watcher.
Stop the loop timer in _cleanup() too. _update_timer() would stop it, but that runs from the prepare watcher, so an already armed timer kept the thread alive until it fired.
Testing:
New unit test test_cleanup_right_after_connections_are_closed, with no server: it fails 5 of 5 on master (the 5s join timeout), and passes with the fix. tests/unit/io/test_libevreactor*.py: 29 passed.
cqlsh against a local Scylla: a SELECT exits in ~0.35s instead of ~5.4s. dtest test_reading_with_ttl passed 6 of 6 (master: 0 of 6), and all of cqlsh_copy_tests.py passed.
Fixed an issue where the event loop could remain running after connections were closed. Shutdown now completes more reliably, including when connections close immediately after being established or while timeout callbacks are running. This helps prevent delays during shutdown and ensures the reactor thread stops promptly, even when active watchers or timer setup are involved.
Cleanup restores the loop reference before stopping the prepare watcher and stops the loop timer. The C wrapper exposes Loop.ref(). Tests check that the reactor thread stops within two seconds during cleanup with active watchers and during a timer-arming race.

1. New loop helper is exposed without docs 📘 Rule violation⭐ New
Description
The new Loop_ref method exposes Loop.ref as a non-underscore helper, but it is used only by
internal cleanup and has no API documentation entry. Because callers can discover and depend on this
exported method without a documented contract, a later change can leave internal-only behavior in
the supported surface.

Resolved findings 1. Later tests keep a reactor thread alive✓ Resolved
Description
LibevLoop._cleanup() now calls ref() before stopping the prepare watcher, but
test_watchers_are_finished restarts that watcher without restoring its unreferenced state. Later
tests reuse the same global loop, so its extra active reference can prevent the reactor thread from
exiting after connections close and make final cleanup wait out the five-second join timeout.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The cleanup change balances the prepare watcher's reference before stopping it, but an existing test restarts the watcher without unreferencing it again. This leaves the shared loop referenced for subsequent tests.
## Fix Focus Areas
- tests/unit/io/test_libevreactor.py[95-99]
- cassandra/io/libevreactor.py[160-163]
## Recommended Fix
When the test restores the prepare watcher, call `_global_loop._loop.unref()` once to restore its original unreferenced state. Keep the test's shutdown reset and watcher restart together with that balancing call.

Balance the reference when restoring the shared preparer.
The existing test_watchers_are_finished calls the changed cleanup path, then restarts _global_loop._preparer here. Cleanup now restores the preparer’s loop reference, so this restart leaves one extra reference. Unref the loop after restarting the preparer; otherwise, subsequent tests can leave the shared reactor thread running with no connections. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the restart of `_global_loop._preparer` in `test_watchers_are_finished`
to unreference its loop after restarting it, balancing the reference restored by
cleanup and preventing the shared reactor thread from remaining active.
Arm a libev timer in test_cleanup_right_after_connections_are_closed so the _loop_timer.stop() path is covered.
The test never adds a timer, so _loop_timer stays inactive. Removing the new _loop_timer.stop() leaves this test's result unchanged. The timer half of the fix is untested, and a regression there would bring back the 5-second join delay for processes with pending timers.

Also fixed in bbab372: the out-of-diff finding from CodeRabbit and Qodo about test_watchers_are_finished. After restarting _global_loop._preparer, it now calls _global_loop._loop.unref(), like LibevLoop.__init__ does, so the shared loop isn't left holding an extra reference for later tests.
Every process using the libev reactor took 5 seconds longer to exit, for
example cqlsh after each command. The atexit LibevLoop._cleanup() joins
the loop thread with a 5 second timeout, and the thread doesn't end.
_cleanup() stops the prepare watcher, which was unref'd when it was
started, without taking that reference back. libev's active count then
drops to -1, and ev_run() keeps waiting while the count isn't zero, so
a loop thread still in ev_run() never returns. Since 2e0ae94 (3.29.11)
the sockets of closed connections are closed by the loop thread, so at
exit it is always still in ev_run() and the join waits out its timeout
on every run. Before, it only happened sometimes.
Ref the loop before stopping the prepare watcher, which needs a new
Loop.ref() in libevwrapper. Also stop the loop timer: once _shutdown is
set, _update_timer() stops it, but that runs from the prepare watcher,
so a timer already armed (a heartbeat, a request timeout) kept the
thread alive until it fired.
_update_timer() checks _shutdown, runs the timer callbacks, then arms the
timer, so _cleanup() could stop the timer in between and have it armed
again right after. Check _shutdown again after arming it.
In cqlsh the rows of COPY FROM ... WITH TTL = '5' expired during that
delay, before the next command could read them, failing the dtest
cqlsh_copy_tests.py::TestCqlshCopy::test_reading_with_ttl.

Stop the loop timer on the loop thread, not from cleanup().

Stop the loop timer on the loop thread, not from _cleanup().
Timer.stop() calls ev_timer_stop() on the reactor's loop without a lock (cassandra/io/libevwrapper.c:551-554). Loop.start() releases the GIL around ev_run() (libevwrapper.c:43-47). While the loop thread runs ev_run(), _cleanup() can therefore modify the timer heap that ev_run() processes on expiry. libev requires calls on one loop to run serially, so this can corrupt the timer heap or crash the process during shutdown. The wrapper does not serialize the two threads.
The stop must run on the loop thread, or only after ev_run() has returned. Keep the preparer.stop() ordering consistent with that change.

Update the shutdown flow in _cleanup so _loop_timer.stop() runs on the loop
thread or only after ev_run() has returned, avoiding concurrent timer-heap
modification. Keep _preparer.stop() ordered consistently with this change.
