Keep DROP EXTENSION lolor out of Spock's DDL replication - #75
With Spock's DDL replication on, dropping lolor on one node queued the drop for the other nodes and reported it as "DDL statement replicated." Every other node ran it in its apply worker, where lolor refuses the drop because it does not come from a client session. With the default exception behaviour the transaction was logged in spock.exception_log and discarded, so lolor stayed installed there while the first node said it had been replicated.
Dropping lolor is node-local, like enable() and disable(). Spock decides whether to queue a statement after the statement has run, so the drop trigger now turns spock.enable_ddl_replication off for the rest of the transaction when it is on, and says in a NOTICE that the drop is not replicated and must be run on each node. Without Spock, or with DDL replication already off, nothing changes.
The regression test covers the setting being turned off for the transaction and left alone when it is off. On two nodes with Spock 5.0.13 and 6.0.0 on PostgreSQL 17 the drop is no longer queued, the other node logs nothing, DDL in a later transaction still replicates, and dropping lolor on the other node directly works. The README, the docs and the release notes describe the behaviour.

Walkthrough
When Spock DDL replication is enabled, the drop hook permits only a standalone DROP EXTENSION using RESTRICT. It disables replication locally for the rest of the transaction. SQL tests and documentation cover the restrictions and node-local drop procedures.

Summary
Replication-aware drop guard src/lolor.c
The code checks whether Spock DDL replication is enabled. It rejects drops inside transaction blocks and forms that could also remove other objects, including when lolor.allow_unsafe_drop is enabled. After an allowed drop, it disables replication locally for the rest of the transaction and emits a notice.
Drop coverage and guidance sql/lolor.sql, README.md, docs/index.md, docs/lolor_release_notes.md
SQL tests cover explicit-transaction, standalone, combined, and cascading drops, plus behavior when replication is disabled. The documentation describes node-local drops, the cluster and single-node procedures, and the restrictions.

Issue (#74): Keep DROP EXTENSION lolor out of Spock's DDL replication
Keep DROP EXTENSION lolor out of Spock's DDL replication

I'd like to avoid referencing spock, although I see the NULL check here if the GUC is not set.
I am also debating if it is better to change spock.reserved_object handling, possibly making replicate_ddl for extensions not be NULL and making false mean to not replicate DROP. Or maybe it needs its own column. That won't help in spock 5.x though.
Alternatively we could document how to drop the extension.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
It's only the GUC name read with missing_ok, no link to spock, and it no-ops when spock isn't there, so it's the one spock touch point in lolor. The weak part is that turning the GUC off is transaction-scoped, so it also skips any later DDL in the same txn; the alone() check only catches mixed drops in a single statement.
Moving the decision into spock (a replicate_ddl flag on reserved_object, or its own column) would scope the skip to just the lolor drop and drop the GUC toggle, which is cleaner, but it won't help 5.x. So I'd keep this as the 5.x path and move it into spock for 6.x once that exists. Added a README note that the drop is node-local and run on each node, and that a mixed drop is refused.

Reject drops already queued by Spock.
spock.replicate_ddl('DROP EXTENSION lolor') queues the SQL before executing it locally. Turning off automatic DDL replication cannot remove that queued command, but the notice says the drop is not replicated. The peer can then reject the drop in its apply worker. Reject this execution path or coordinate with Spock to prevent the queue entry. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

This one is inherent to the GUC approach rather than something lolor can catch cleanly. spock.replicate_ddl() queues the command itself, outside the automatic DDL path the setting governs, so lolor turning the setting off cannot un-queue it. Detecting it from lolor would mean reading spock's queue or its internal replicate_ddl flag, which is the spock coupling the maintainer asked to keep out of lolor (see the thread above). The clean fix is spock deciding per object (reserved_object.replicate_ddl for the extension), which is the 6.x direction under discussion here; explicitly calling spock.replicate_ddl on a node-local drop stays a deliberate override until then. Leaving it for that rather than reaching into spock from here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@ibrarahmad Understood. This PR controls automatic DDL replication through the GUC. An explicit spock.replicate_ddl() call uses a separate path and remains a deliberate override.
I withdraw the request to detect or reject that path in lolor. That request does not fit the stated boundary against coupling lolor to Spock internals. This does not mean the GUC can cancel an already queued command.
Would you like a follow-up issue for the Spock-side per-object replication control, or is that already tracked?

Learning: In pgEdge/lolor, the PostgreSQL drop event trigger `lolor_on_drop_extension()` in `src/lolor.c` intentionally applies the same sole-client-session requirement as `lolor.disable()` when lolor is enabled. Dropping the extension must restore native `pg_catalog` large-object function names, and renaming preserves function OIDs, so bypassing the session guard is unsafe. Replicated extension drops in apply workers are unsupported, as are replicated migrations.

Suppress replication when lolor is already disabled.
When lolor is disabled, the trigger returns before turning off Spock DDL replication. Spock can then queue the drop for other nodes, contrary to the node-local contract.

Update the disabled-lolor early-return path in the trigger containing

Spock does not replicate the drop; preserve the existing behavior for all other
paths.

With spock.enable_ddl_replication on, dropping lolor on one node queued the
drop for the others and reported it as replicated. Every other node ran it
in its apply worker, where lolor refuses it because it does not come from a
client session, so with the default exception behaviour the transaction was
logged in spock.exception_log and discarded, and lolor stayed installed there.
Dropping lolor is node-local, like enable() and disable(). Spock decides
whether to queue a statement after it has run, so the drop trigger turns
spock.enable_ddl_replication off for the rest of the transaction when it is
on, and says in a NOTICE that the drop is not replicated and must be run on
each node. Without spock, or with DDL replication already off, nothing
changes.
Turning the setting off covers the whole transaction, so anything else that
goes with the drop would stay on the other nodes without a word. Before
anything is dropped, the trigger refuses a statement that also removes other
objects: several extension names, DROP EXTENSION lolor CASCADE (which also
takes a user's views or functions that call lolor's functions), DROP SCHEMA
lolor CASCADE, and DROP OWNED BY the extension owner. It also refuses a drop
inside a transaction block, where the setting would reach a later statement;
run on its own the drop is a single-statement transaction and the setting
covers only it. Both hold with lolor.allow_unsafe_drop on as well, since the
hazard is replication, not lolor's state. A plain DROP EXTENSION lolor still
restores the native large object function names as before.
The regression test covers the setting turned off for the drop and left alone
when it is off, the refusal inside a transaction block, and the four
mixed-object refusals with lolor, the other extension and a dependent view
still present afterwards. The README, the docs and the release notes say the
drop is node-local, must be run on each node, and that a drop that would
remove more than lolor is refused. A new "Dropping the extension" section
walks through the order on a replicated cluster: stop large object use,
let replication drain and compare lolor.digest(), take the lolor tables out
of the replication sets on every node, migrate the data out on every node,
then drop on each node.
Also give the two description-table OID helpers their (void) parameter
lists. PostgreSQL 19's CI builds with -Werror, where clang rejects an
empty parameter list as a declaration without a prototype, so every pull
request failed the PG 19 jobs on these two pre-existing definitions.
