Refuse HTTPS to HTTP redirects in the shared HTTP client - #200
resolve.HTTPClient() is used for all forge API traffic, including forge api. It used the default net/http redirect policy, which follows a redirect from HTTPS to HTTP. net/http only strips sensitive headers when a redirect goes to a different host, so a downgrade on the same host resends Authorization in cleartext.
That means a misconfigured proxy or anyone able to inject a redirect on the HTTPS hop could make the CLI send the user's token over plain HTTP. A new test confirms this: without the fix, the plain HTTP server receives Authorization: Bearer secret.
This came up during review of #199, but it affects every backend, so it's a separate PR.
Change
HTTPClient() now sets CheckRedirect:
A redirect from HTTPS to HTTP is refused with refusing redirect from https to insecure http, so nothing is sent to the HTTP URL. It returns an error rather than http.ErrUseLastResponse, so backends don't try to decode a 3xx body as an API response. The message names no URL, because the redirect target is already in the *url.Error that net/http wraps it in.
The default limit of 10 redirects is kept (maxRedirects), because a custom CheckRedirect replaces the built-in one.
HTTPS to HTTPS, HTTP to HTTPS and HTTP to HTTP redirects are followed as before. Hosts the user explicitly configured as http:// (--host http://..., FORGE_HOST, or scheme = http) keep working.
newClientForBaseURL now also passes the shared client to forges.NewClient with forges.WithHTTPClient(hc). Previously only the default and config-typed forges got it, so a self-hosted forge found by auto-detection was probed and built with http.DefaultClient. That meant it had no redirect protection and no User-Agent.
Testing
New tests in internal/resolve/transport_test.go:
TestHTTPClientRejectsHTTPSToHTTPRedirect: a TLS server redirects to a plain HTTP server. The request fails and the HTTP server is never contacted. This test fails without the fix.
TestHTTPClientFollowsSafeRedirects: HTTPS to HTTPS, HTTP to HTTPS and HTTP to HTTP still work.
TestHTTPClientKeepsRedirectLimit: a redirect loop stops after 10 hops.
TestDetectedForgeUsesSharedHTTPClient: an HTTPS forge with no type in config is auto-detected and its HTTPS to HTTP redirect is refused, the HTTP server is never contacted and every request carries the User-Agent. This test fails without the WithHTTPClient change.
gofmt, go vet, go test -race ./..., go test -tags=tinygo ./gitlab, the js and wasip1 wasm builds and golangci-lint all pass.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
HTTPS requests no longer follow redirects to HTTP. HTTPS-to-HTTPS, HTTP-to-HTTPS, and HTTP-to-HTTP redirects continue to work, and redirect chains stop after 10 hops.
Redirect errors show sanitized URLs, excluding credentials, query parameters, and fragments.
Requests to supported services use a shared HTTP client and reject insecure redirects before sending authorization headers to the HTTP destination.
HTTPClient now limits redirects to 10 and rejects redirects from HTTPS to HTTP. The shared client is configured for forge clients. Tests cover allowed redirect paths, downgrade rejection, and redirect limits.

Summary
Redirect policy and forge client wiring internal/resolve/transport.go, internal/resolve/resolve.go
HTTPClient enforces a 10-redirect limit and rejects HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects. newClientForBaseURL configures the shared client before registering forge implementations.
Tests cover allowed scheme combinations, rejected HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects, redirect limits, and the shared client behavior for a detected self-hosted forge.
git-pkgs/forge#199: The Radicle backend uses the shared HTTPClient, so its API traffic uses the redirect policy added here.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 292dd
The redirect protection is ready to merge, but a rejected redirect can print credentials from its Location URL in CLI output. Consider redacting that error in a follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 292dd
The change strengthens protection against sending tokens over insecure redirects. Redirect-error text may still expose sensitive URL values, and some download paths have not been shown to inherit the protection.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: The new redirect-refusal path can expose credentials or signed values embedded in a server-supplied redirect URL through returned errors. The callback message contains no URL, but the inspected runtime adds the raw Location to the outer error. This is a diagnostic confidentiality concern, not a bypass of downgrade rejection; behavior on the declared toolchain remains unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The protection covers API requests and ordinary backend requests constructed through the resolver, including dynamically detected self-hosted forges. Its authority remains that of the invoking user's selected forge token; the inspected change does not add a service identity or broader token source.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A server or proxy able to supply an HTTPS response can direct the client toward HTTP, but the new gate blocks transmission to that target. A separate conditional exposure remains if the target URL itself contains a secret: the inspected runtime includes that value in the returned error. This path requires a secret-bearing redirect URL; it does not derive a secret from the request's Authorization header.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Policy inheritance is not proven universal. GitHub release asset download explicitly passes http.DefaultClient to its dependency in both base and head. That exception predates this PR; the dependency implementation was unavailable, so authenticated downgrade exposure on that path remains unresolved rather than a verified new vulnerability.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The redirect callback uses request-local history and introduces no mutable policy state. A root detection error terminates detection; later API probes may continue after individual failures, but reuse the same client and base scheme rather than retrying with a permissive client or an HTTP fallback.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Validate and, if necessary, sanitize the outer redirect error on the declared toolchain while preserving error identity. Include secret-bearing redirect targets in that validation; a URL-free callback message alone does not establish end-to-end redaction.

The redirect check itself looks right. A few things before merging:
Self-hosted forges found by auto-detection don't get the new policy. newClientForBaseURL in internal/resolve/resolve.go builds hc := HTTPClient() but only passes it to the default and config-typed forges, never as forges.WithHTTPClient(hc). So forges.Client.httpClient stays nil, and RegisterDomain (reached from resolve.go:384) probes and builds the backend with nil, which gitea, gerrit, bitbucket and tangled turn into http.DefaultClient. A self-hosted instance without a forge-type in config is the most likely place to meet an HTTPS to HTTP redirect from a misconfigured proxy, and its token is still unprotected there (it also misses the User-Agent). Please add opts = append(opts, forges.WithHTTPClient(hc)) and a test that goes through the detection path.
The redaction doesn't keep the redirect target's secrets out of the error. When CheckRedirect fails, net/http sets ue.(*url.Error).URL = loc, the raw Location header with userinfo, query and fragment intact, so err.Error() still prints ?sig=locsecret. The test only passes because it checks uerr.Err. What's left is redacting the user's own request URL, which they typed. Please drop urlForError, TestURLForError and TestHTTPClientRedirectErrorOmitsCredentials, and use a plain message like refusing redirect from https to insecure http, since the target is already in the url.Error prefix.
transport.go:37 hard-codes "stopped after 10 redirects" next to the maxRedirects constant. Use fmt.Errorf("stopped after %d redirects", maxRedirects).
newClientForBaseURL now passes forges.WithHTTPClient(hc), so detection and backends built by RegisterDomain use the shared client. Added TestDetectedForgeUsesSharedHTTPClient, which auto-detects an unconfigured HTTPS Gitea and checks that the HTTPS to HTTP redirect is refused, the HTTP server is never contacted and every request has the User-Agent. Without the fix it fails: the token reaches the HTTP server and probes go out with Go's default agent.
Dropped urlForError and both tests. The error is now a fixed refusing redirect from https to insecure http value, checked with errors.Is.
