Olá! I’m a Lecturer in Computer Science at Birmingham City University, in the UK. My research focuses on accessibility and inclusive communication, particularly technologies for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people. Much of my work explores how captions and typography can convey information beyond the literal content of speech, making spoken communication more accessible, expressive, and engaging.
Before joining BCU, I completed my PhD in Computing and Information Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where I worked with Matt Huenerfauth and Roshan Peiris and was a member of the Center for Accessibility and Inclusion Research Lab (CAIR). My thesis can be found here.
Previously, I obtained a master’s degree in Computer Engineering at the University of Campinas, working with Paula Costa on speech-modulated typography. My dissertation can be found here.
I was also a co-founder of Preface, a design studio from Campinas, Brazil. From 2007 to 2025, we worked with clients from many sectors, with a particular focus on educational projects. For my work as a designer there, I have won some awards.
